Deep Cove father takes on Kiewit after son’s death

On a rainy February afternoon in 2009, Sam Fitzpatrick was crushed to death when a boulder more than 1.5 metres in diameter tumbled downhill through his worksite near Toba Inlet, B.C., striking his head as he drilled rock.

He died almost instantly. He was 24.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak says documents obtained by Global News detailing concerns about ice falling from the Port Mann bridge just weeks before ice fell from the Port Mann Bridge prove the province did its due diligence in asking contractor Kiewit-Flatiron for evidence the structure would be safe.

Engineers at a B.C. Crown corporation raised concerns about snow and ice falling from cables on the Port Mann Bridge more than three years before a winter storm caused just that, sending sheets of ice onto drivers on the newly opened structure.
