Abortion series nominated for CAJ data journalism award

Our investigation into inequities in abortion access in Canada was nominated for a Canadian Association of Journalists award in the data journalism category.

The series of stories included a map of how far you’d be from an abortion provider anywhere in the country. It was challenging for all the wrong reasons: Many abortion providers, especially hospitals and above all hospitals in small towns, don’t make their abortion services public.

The threat to abortion providers in Canada in 2016 is so real that we had to promise to make our map purposely vague so as not to give providers’ exact location away.

Leslie Young did an outstanding visualization job under trying circumstances.
